Basilica Cistern – Istanbul

As a child, I always wanted to see the Basilica Cistern and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul with my own eyes.

The cistern became world-famous thanks in particular to Dan Brown’s book “Inferno”.

The water came from 19 kilometers away and the cistern could hold 100,000 tons of water.

After 52 steps down, you stand in a cistern that today measures 128 x 64 meters. 336 marble columns rise almost 8 meters into the air.

Emperor Justinian I had the cistern built in 532 to supply the Great Palace with water. The water was later used to irrigate the gardens of the Topkapi Palace.

Today, the cistern is a museum that visitors can visit – and concerts are even held here!
